Support for Windows Server 2008 is Coming to an End Soon!

At the end of this year, Microsoft announced the end of technical support for Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008, and SQL Server 2008 R2. Official technical support will officially conclude on January 14, 2020.

This means that any applications and services running on Windows Server 2008 will no longer receive critical security updates. Following the January 14, 2020 deadline, Microsoft will cease providing automatic patches, updates, or online technical assistance.

The BlueKeep Security Vulnerability

As a critical point of information, several versions of Windows contain a severe security vulnerability within the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). This flaw allows hackers to remotely take full control of your servers. This vulnerability affects Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008. The security flaw is cataloged under CVE-2019-0708, widely known as BlueKeep.

In 2018, a total of 156 security vulnerabilities were discovered in Windows Server 2008, followed by another 137 vulnerabilities in 2019. This number is bound to rise, and these vulnerabilities will remain unpatched since Microsoft will no longer close security gaps after January 14, 2020.

Cyberattacks and ransomware threats could heavily target Windows Server 2008 in the near future, given that Microsoft will no longer provide security patches for this version. Do not let your critical business data be locked up or rendered completely unusable due to a malicious cyberattack.

What Should You Do?

If you are still operating on Windows Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008, we strongly advise you to upgrade your Windows environment. Upgrading to Windows Server 2012 (which will remain supported by Microsoft until January 10, 2023) or Windows Server 2016 (supported until January 12, 2027) are highly viable options available right now.
