Differences Between VM (Virtual Machine) and Container

For users of the Virtual Data Center, the two terms above are certainly familiar. VM (Virtual Machine) and Container. However, there are still few who know the difference between a VM and a Container. Therefore, I will discuss the differences between a VM and a Container. But, before discussing the differences between the two, I will inform you what a VM is and what a Container is. 

VM (Virtual Machine) is software that can isolate a computer machine and can run all the same programs as on the original computer, or commonly called a duplicate of an original computer machine. 

Meanwhile, a Container in computer language is a technology that can isolate a process from other processes, which will isolate only the library and applications used without isolating all components such as hardware, kernel, operating system, and others. 

VM (Virtual Machine) 
CONTAINER 

Although both run on virtualization, VMs and Containers have several differences. Among them are: 

  • Containers are more effective and lightweight compared to VMs (Virtual Machines) 

Why can containers be more effective and lighter than VMs (Virtual Machines)? The answer is because containers only isolate the library and applications to be run. Unlike Virtual Machines, which require isolating all components such as hardware, kernel, operating system, and others.

  • Containers can achieve resource efficiency in the best possible way on the system

Unlike VMs, Containers can achieve resource usage efficiency very well. Thus, when one container is ready, another container can use the resources of the idling container, and vice versa.

  • VMs (Virtual Machines) use all existing resources on the host, while Containers only use a small amount of resources from the host 
  • VM (Virtual Machine) uses its own kernel which will likely be processed directly on the host 
  • Containers are not allowed to access the kernel, whereas Virtual Machines can use their own kernel
